Foundational Roundtable of Artificial Intelligence Policy Lab on AI Policy & Governance: Innovation, Economic Opportunity & Safety

Date: 25th July, 2025
Venue: India International Centre, New Delhi

The discussion laid the foundation for the establishment of AIPL at National Law University, Delhi. Organised by IGAP and Kaio, it was held on July 25, 2025, at the India International Centre and focused on fostering early, cross-sector dialogue on the governance, safety, and policy implications of AI in India.

As AI rapidly reshapes economic activity, public institutions, and social systems, questions of governance, safety, and accountability have become central to policy debates worldwide. In India, this conversation is unfolding alongside growing domestic AI capacity, an expanding innovation ecosystem, and increasing regulatory attention across sectors.

Against this backdrop, National Law University Delhi, in partnership with Kaio and the IGAP, convened a closed-door stakeholder discussion on July 25, 2025. The roundtable brought together experts from industry, academia, civil society, and international organisations to examine how India can approach AI governance in a manner that is risk-aware, legally grounded, and responsive to the realities of AI deployment. Discussions focused on the need for clearer conceptual frameworks, differentiated understanding of the AI technology stack, and policy approaches that move beyond abstract principles toward operational clarity.
